National Public Radio, the U.S. public broadcaster, has become a leading podcaster just two months after dipping its toes into the MP3 waters to meet requests from listeners, and they’ve been swimming along ever since. In fact, according to an article in the online journal of
USC Annenberg, NPR has reached the No. 1 spot on iTunes for the most downloaded podcast. On Nov. 21, NPR’s podcasts occupied 11 spots on the iTunes Top 100, more than any other media outlet.
NPR has done much more than simply re-purpose its radio material for podcasts. They’re hosting podcasts for member stations, and selling and splitting revenue with them. Plus they’ve launched original podcasts under the new alt.NPR brand as experiment with edgier content.
NPR is a podcast phenomenon to watch (and listen to).
