About six months ago, I found myself in an unexpected trough because of a couple of stalled projects. Although I hate cold calling and hadn’t done any in almost 10 years, I felt it was time to take the plunge and dial for dollars. (I should add that I also contacted my existing clients, who are my best source of new business and referrals.) Lo and behold, the response was surprisingly positive! No one hung up on me and everyone I reached was willing to hear my message. Why? I didn’t ask for anything. Instead, I offered something – an invitation to a free Webinar on blogging and podcasting.

As it turned out, some of the people weren’t really interested in the Webinar itself, but they were interested in me, because I was interested in them AND I was giving something of value away for free.

The other day, this article by Troy White at Duct Tape Marketing caught my eye, because it espouses the same philosophy of “give to get.” It works, in life and in business.
